TAZKIYAH
A well developped system of heart purification
Tazkiyah, is an Arabic antecedent that literally means purification, growth and betterment. In Islamic terminology it renders to the purification, growth and betterment of human souls. The Holy Quran mentions four times that Tazkiyah, was one of the assignment of the Last Messenger Muhammad (May Allah shower His blessings and peace on him). Allah Almighty says:
''Certainly did Allah confer [great] favour upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.'' [Aali Imran, 3:164]
Verses with the related meanings also appear in Surah Al-Baqarah two times [2:129, 174], and once in Surah Al-Jumuah [62:2]
Purification of souls and their proper growth is one of the major objectives of Islam. Purification of souls renders to remove the stains of all evils from the heart, that is the nucleus of a human soul. Afterwards keeping the heart clean and illuminated by the light of Qur'an and Divine Phrases taught by the Last Messenger of Allah Almighty (May He shower His blessings and peace upon him), is the duty of faithful believers. The ultimate and final goal of Tazkiyah is the peace of mind and tranquility of heart.
Tazkiyah is the basic objective of all the modes of worshiping Allah Almighty. Salaah, Siyam, Zakah and Hajj are not only the ways to acquire the Pleasure of God, but the accurate means of Tazkiyah as well.
As a humble student of Islamic studies and a sinful person, I suggest the following strategies for Tazkiyah:
1. Repent on your sins, whether major or minor, ask His forgiveness and be determined to avoid His disobedience in every situation and fully submit before His Decree.
2. Recite at least one Part (Juz) of the Holy Qur'an daily, preferably in the morning.
3. Try to understand meanings of the Qur'an, at least one Rukoo daily.
4. Give all the rights, that you neglected ever before.
5. Offer daily prayers in time and try to add maximum Nawafil (optional prayers).
6. Keep mending your conduct and behaviour with all the people around you.
7. Don't forget to recite Adhkar Masnoonah recommended by the Prophet (May Allah shower His blessings and peace on him) for all important actions.
8. Try your best to help the needy and give alms at least once a weak.
9. If your health allows you, fast for Ayam Beedh ( 13th, 14th, & 15th of each Islamic month except Ramadhan).
10. Try to perform all the actions in their best form caring all the manners and etiquette.
My Allah help us to follow these strategies in our daily life. Ameen.
